Howard T. Stephens - Planning Commission
I have decided to run for the Planning Commission because I want to make a great place to live even better. I believe in a balanced approach to growth and feel I would be effective helping the Planning Commission reach consensus on key issues. I believe in maintaining our rural character and developing the best business and recreational opportunities in the town that are cost effective solutions advocated by the majority of our citizens.
I have been blessed with a good life, a wonderful family and marriage to Lauren for 52 years. I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BBA and a MA where I taught classes.
For over 40 years I was involved in the cosmetic and toiletry industry, holding a number of positions in sales, manufacturing, advertising, sales management and consulting I also ran my own company for 15 years. I was active in our community in Norwalk, CT coaching several sports teams and directing a large youth soccer program. During my involvement with the Westport Unitarian Church, I directed their fund raising programs, served on the board of directors and taught classes.
Skiing together as a family was an annual tradition for many years. I served as President of the Norwalk Ski Club and initiated a major lodge building project, organized group trips to fantastic ski areas all over the USA and Canada, and also served on the Ct Ski Council.
In 2016 Lauren and I moved to Charlestown, RI where we had been visiting with family for many years and enjoying wonderful summer vacations. We enjoy the beaches and Ninigret Pond, boating and kayaking. My wife and I love to travel and dance. My new hobby is playing piano and someday I hope to play great blues with our son.
I know that my varied business and community activities will bring a balanced perspective to the Charlestown Planning Commission’s long-term goal setting and realistic plans to achieve them.
