Stephen J. Stokes - Town Council

Stephen has been a resident of Charlestown since childhood and takes pride in the Charlestown community of both past and present. In addition to professional work in the fire service, Stephen has participated and served as a volunteer for Charlestown Ambulance and fire. Outside Stephen’s passion for EMS/Fire Services, he has worked with members of the Town Council and Planning Commission to help deliver the Solarize Charlestown Initiative and served on the Economic Improvement Commission. Stephen currently resides in Charlestown with his family where he also enjoys reading, playing music, and fine woodworking.


Stephen has over 20 years of experience in public safety and public safety administration. Beginning as a volunteer member of Charlestown Fire and Charlestown Rescue. Stephen received a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Norwich University. He also completed many state and national certification programs (see below) to become an accomplished Fire and EMS professional. Stephen continues his career as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Cranston.


As a former governor-appointed member of the Department of Health Ambulance Service Advisory Board and EMS Administrator, Stephen helped deliver lasting change to the statewide EMS protocols and educational standards for current and future EMS providers. Stephen continues to participate in the education and training of the fire service as a State EMS instructor as well as a technical rescue instructor for the Rhode Island State Fire Academy.


Working within local communities continues to provide inspiration and fuel to Stephen’s aspirations and goals for a transparent and effective government that accurately represents local needs. Stephen believes that an active role in local government is imperative to bridge the concerns of our residents with the needs of our community. He aims to deliver effective governance that will preserve the character of Charlestown for current and future generations.
