Jill Fonnemann - Town Council

A lifelong South County resident and proud Charlestown homeowner for more than 13 years, Jill Fonnemann is deeply committed to preserving the character, history, and natural beauty of the community she proudly calls home. Living in one of Charlestown's oldest homes, built in 1732, has strengthened her appreciation for the town's unique heritage and reinforced her commitment to thoughtful growth and responsible stewardship.

Jill brings more than 28 years of leadership and management experience in the hospitality industry. During her 13 years at the Charlestown Rathskeller Tavern, she has advanced from bartender to Lead Bartender, Bar Manager, and now Beverage Director.

In her current role, Jill oversees all aspects of beverage operations, including budgeting, vendor negotiations, inventory management, menu development, regulatory compliance, and staff leadership. She manages a team of more than 30 employees and has built a reputation for fairness, accountability, sound financial management, and collaborative leadership. Her experience balancing budgets, solving problems, and working with diverse groups has prepared her to make thoughtful, practical decisions on behalf of Charlestown residents.

Jill believes strong communities are built through service, collaboration, and volunteerism. She is currently serving her fourth year on the Charlestown Parks and Recreation Commission, where she has helped guide projects that enhance recreation, tourism, environmental stewardship, and public spaces. She also serves on the Parks and Recreation Office Committee.

Her volunteer activities include:

  • Founder and organizer of the annual Rathskeller Art Festival, raising funds to provide free art classes, healthy snacks, and art supplies for local children.

  • Organizer of fundraising efforts supporting employees affected by the Matunuck Oyster Bar fire.

  • Organizer of community fundraisers for local families experiencing personal hardships.

  • Volunteer for animal rescue organizations and wildlife initiatives.

  • Volunteer for the Charlestown Land Trust fundraising event.

  • Third-year volunteer at the Rhythm & Roots Festival.

Protecting Charlestown's natural resources has long been one of Jill's passions. She is currently completing coursework to become a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and is dedicated to preserving open space, protecting wildlife habitat, maintaining Charlestown's dark skies, and ensuring responsible environmental stewardship.

An avid hiker and camper, Jill has created native pollinator gardens at her home and believes thoughtful conservation and responsible land management are essential to preserving Charlestown's unique character for future generations.

Jill believes effective government begins with listening. She values respectful dialogue, transparency, fiscal responsibility, and collaboration, recognizing that the best decisions come from considering diverse perspectives and focusing on practical solutions that benefit the entire community.

As a candidate for Town Council, Jill is committed to:

  • Preserving Charlestown's historic character and small-town identity.

  • Protecting the town's natural resources and open spaces.

  • Supporting responsible fiscal management and transparent local government.

  • Encouraging meaningful public participation in local decision-making.

  • Strengthening community partnerships and volunteerism.

  • Maintaining the high quality of life that makes Charlestown an exceptional place to live, work, and raise a family.

Jill believes Charlestown's greatest strength is its people. She is committed to serving with integrity, common sense, and a collaborative approach that puts the interests of residents first.
